Jock White Memorial Field Day Context – February 2019

After such a great run of Christchurch, Canterbury weather, with fine sunny conditions every day for a month and temperatures running in the mid to high 20’s, a spell of cooler weather and some rain arrived here just in time for the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of February.

Saturday the group had the extra hurdle of a police cordon roadblock in the Anzac Drive area. Apparently some roads had been blocked off as part of a ongoing police investigation and search following an incident involving shots being fired as a speeding vehicle fled from police, at about 1am on Saturday morning.

The Jock White Memorial Field Day is one of the main events on the New Zealand Amateur Radio club calendar, being a contest with rules that simulate (at least in part) the setup and operation of a temporary station, under “grid down” conditions. Temporary antennas are only allowed to be erected on the Saturday the contest begins.
